Reyut: The Jewish Campaign For Healthy Relationships

What is Reyut?

Reyut (רעות) can be translated as companionship, partnership, and friendship.  In the Sheva Berachot (שבע ברכות), one of the central pieces of liturgy from the Jewish wedding service, Jews wish and pray that a new couple will know several aspects of a relationship.  One of them is reyut (רעות). Reyut reflects the sense of equality, mutuality, and respect that should characterize every relationship.  For us, Reyut is the core of creating healthy relationships.

Who are We?

Our names are Ari Lorge and Sari Lipsett.  We are twins who grew up as active members of the Jewish community.  While these experiences imbued us with a strong Jewish identity, we witnessed and experienced in these spaces dating violence, coercion, abuse, and other unhealthy behaviors.  These impacted us and our community in severe ways.  As committed Jews devoted to ensuring our communities are sacred spaces we are launching a campaign to educate, raise awareness, and foster action that will ensure the next generation of young Jews have the resources they require to meet the growing plague of gender violence in America.

The CDC has reported that one in 4 women has been a victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in her lifetime.  The Jewish community suffers at roughly the same rate as the national population.  It is time to act!

We are an organization founded to promote healthy relationships and a Jewish community that is ready to stand up against teen dating violence, domestic violence, and gender violence.  In addition to our blog, we run programming for congregations (adult and youth programming), Jewish summer camps (staff and camper programming), and youth groups.  Email us at: reyutcampaign@gmail.com for more details.
